[hometext] => The first of three poems I wrote Tuesday night, in a suburb of New Orleans, this one focuses on the religious basis of the holiday.
[bodytext] => In the spirit of good Catholics, a million souls congregate in a tiny, public ballroom. Intoxicants taint the blood and minds of all present. The air is heavy with the scent of maidens in heat, with plastic shrapnel and bile, with the hope that one might be the last to sin before succumbing to decency and good behavior. In a global orgy, this church of the lost celebrates, unwitting, the greatest remaining glories: the sensation and perception that are unique to humanity – profound gifts given in exchange for immortality.
