Cut lake’s skin like unsheathed knife.
Feathers ripple in the breeze,
Soft as pillow, pure as light.
Liquid beaded eyes glisten,
Dark, fathomless pools in mist.
Sinuous neck arched and poised,
Head turned as if to listen.

Swan-maiden sits at edge of mere
Twisting droplets from sleek, dark mane.
Unblemished skin, pearlescent peach,
Blue eyes eclipsed with anguished tears.
Twined feathers sit atop her head,
White snow-down dress caress her skin,
Supple as wind-blown reed her waist,
Stretched out on twilight’s forest bed.

Daylight’s colours fade at dusk,
Swan glides to shore and waits.
As last warmth suffused her form
To shed off daytime’s husk.
Feathers turn to fingers,
Beak retreats to nose,
Eyes swirl from black to blue,
But grace still lingers.

The swan-maiden turns a tragic dance,
Entombed in morphing cycles.
Her diamond tears raise the waters,
Into forest streams advance.
Towns flood who had forgot her tale,
Their people pray for mercy.
Left alone trapped by lake’s cool border,
Now swan-maiden sets sail.
