Out in some unfamiliar parking lot
You’re not rooted in some safety
But focusing on where you’re not
Well come on big brother,
Clench the steering wheel that tight
It doesn’t matter if their wrong
So long as you know you’re not right

You start to wonder what the wind’s like in the mountains
And you miss driving warmly near suburban fountains
Back when time was a word and a word could just be
And you knew a great friend from a sworn enemy
And you know, I’d sure like to know
How does a heart beat when it’s hanging that low?

Mom says the feelings you have will balance
That we must feel hurt if we expect to grow
And that she has accepted that we must feel all things
But there are some things you are feeling where you just don’t want to go
And the city is so menacing
That you just have to fear
And I know you long for a connection
Just to make it in here

You start to dream about abandoned companions
As you try to make stars out through the fog in the canyons
Wishing for one of them to just shoot you a phone call
To let you know you still exist after all
And you know, I’d sure like to know
How does a heart beat when it’s hanging that low?

She’s asking you to pray right?
As tears are flowing down your eyes
But you gave up on divinity
Because you hated religion’s sad lies
And now she is asking to give it a try
It’s not the answer you wanted trying to hide
But you finally come clean to her
Bring up the point that maybe God’s not on your side

The car gets out of park and into drive mode
You’ve taken down the connecting road
The only road you know to get you back home
So you can write out my words and know you’re not alone
And while I have you here, you know, I’d sure like to know
How does a heart beat when it’s hanging that low?

Thank you very much for your comments and the "praise", I'm not sure if it's entirely earned but it does mean alot to have a work like this actually be enjoyed by people so it was nice to get some feedback.

On a note about the work, the heart beat line has been stuck in my head as a chorus for awhile now but I knew it had to come when I was actually in that state of mind where it could actually apply. The poem it'sself is narrated through a ghost (on a personal note, my brother) and it's almost ironic for him to be stating what the character is feeling. It's a strange and magical feeling when one lets the questions in their own work get to them and this happen to me with this work, thank you again for the comments.
