A stranger staring back at me
I suppose it is just a matter of degree
Yet there is such a feeling of inadequacy

Perhaps I'm lost, I ponder
Everything seems unrecognizable, so I wonder
I'm so terribly forgetful at times
Feels like I am loosing my mind

An inner voice screams out to me
It was a tone of fear I perceived
Was there an inner deamon set free
Who was now lurking after me

I struggle to recapture inner harmony
A loosing battle when compared to present company
The confusion appears unavoidable
My strength to resist is no longer invincible

Now I feel turned inside out
And nothing seems familiar through out
I feel that I am misplaced, and in danger

Hey Will it's great to be reading a write from u.
This so much reminds me of depression and of how one struggles to keep inner harmony. A very well penned piece of poetry expressed so well. Well done Will.
*warm hugs*

Terry, This one really brought me some sadness. The first thoughts that came to mind were of some of the wonderful folks I used to take care of when I worked geriatrics. It would sadden me so to know THEY knew they were losing memories and places in time. To know you are depleting daily....ah, I loved so many of those sweet folks. Memories bittersweet. Wonderfully penned piece. I love to read your thought provoking writes, my friend...Peace to you, Laura

I'm new at YPDC, but kinda old at life *shaky-hand thing*...
So yeah, been there...Also I liked to play around with the idea of a pandora box sort of thing while reading your poem (write?).
Pretty cool.
Hope everything is okay now!! : (

...whoa, a retired social worker and you can still think...my knee is bent and my hat is off to you...I'm just a school teacher about ready to retire and I'm a blubbering idiot much of the time...

...I actually had a nervous breakdown sixteen months ago...the best thing that ever happened to me...it forced me to wrestle with that stranger and not just run and hide...crazy thing...I am real particular about what movies I watch...no junk stuff...no shallow horror movies, etc....well, I was with my kids, twenty-seven year old kids, and they were going to watch a video called, "The Boogey Man..."...aw c'mon now kids, the boogey man...I was embarrassed, but I watched it anyway and it was an awesome experience...

...so many of us are horribly maimed by our agonizingly "Self" destroying attachment years experience...we have such reservoirs of mind numbing pain that getting anywhere near them to deal with them is a terrorizing endeavor..."The Boogey Man" drove home just how terrorizing the entities that control our lives are to some people...dealing with deep emotional trauma and regaining control over our lives is scary business...I tried every which way to avoid it...without the nervous breakdown, I never would have dealt with it...

...I'm the healthiest I've ever been...but, there is a down side...I've picked up with my emotional development where I left off...I am an emotional twenty-one year old in the body of a fifty-four year old...but, life is great, anyway...never thought I'd die an optimist...joke of the century...

...I don't know if the stranger in your poem is the real "Self," or the false "self..."...if it is the real "Self," I hope you get acquainted real fast...if it is the false "self," I hope you knock the living daylights out of it...

...good luck and tons of blessings...

Geesh... this resonates. I lived with a stranger-self stuffed way deep down inside for many years and got so good at refusing to acknowledge her... that I eventually convinced myself that she didn't exist. It took time and change and (a lot of other stuff I won't go into here...) - but... finally... we're getting reacquainted. (lol - now it's the fool on the outside that I don't understand!)

Your third stanza feels... wonderfully transitional to me. I feel a bit brash for saying as much, but - I'm inclined to think that you're not so bad off if you can still hear those screams. And demons, scary as they are, do the most damage, I think, when trapped within. I'd suggest that that battle is by no means lost - rather that it's just begun. And here on this page, Terry, is evidence that you have what it takes to overcome. Very well done!

Interesting similar to my posting Roaming thru the house. The feelings seem so real and ya fight off so no one will see . That at times I too look back at a stranger looking at me. Stay strong
