Array ( [sid] => 108485 [catid] => 1 [aid] => mick [title] => Goodwill [time] => 2005-10-26 02:17:14 [hometext] => [bodytext] => I bought a pair of GAP jeans today at Goodwill
A store that sells used cloths in nice condition

The man in front of me bought a board game for $1.50
The couple in front of him bought several articles of clothing for $19.70
Adding both their purchases didn’t come close in to comparison of just the price of the jeans I was currently wearing

I was dressed in a red T-shirt
Brand new LEVI STRUASS jeans
And Birkenstocks

It was perfectly clear to me that both people who had made purchases
Worked very hard to save each penny
And that I was just some spoiled rich girl trying to save a buck
Raping their way of life

Nevertheless, the cashier looked me in the eye
And cupped my hand with both of her hands as she gave me back my change
I could see in her eyes and feel in her touch that she had a benevolent soul

In terms of monetary wealth she was poor
But gave more than 99.9% of the population

She did not discriminate against me for what I had
As we look down upon the working class and the poor
Perhaps if the middle and upper class had just a tenth of what she had in compassion
I would not have had to fight to hide my tears of shame

Poetry is much like a great photo, a single "moment in time" capturing many feelings and emotions. Yet, they are very alive; creating stirrings within the readers who form visual "pictures" of the expressed emotions within the Poem. ©
