Never having been to war;
my body, only foe,
lends not a feather to
those who’ve fought and know.

So easily do I in health,
cede a sickened me away,
as if all I am must remain
in wealth the same to stay.

How frantic do I tear a cloying sheet
from my sleeping breathing mouth,
mind scrambling fast beyond command
my hand claws the sheet without.

So when that demented news arrives,
when my body seeks to spirit me,
how desperate carry will I the fight
which loss in time I know will be.
